TRAINING & WORKSHOPS: LEAN THINKING

Value Stream Mapping (1 day)

Description:
In this workshop, participants learn the basics of Value Stream Mapping, a tool used to make processes visible, identify waste and its root causes, and plan lean improvement. Key principles of Lean Thinking and process improvement will be examined to help set the context for the discussion. In addition to learning how to map the Current State and envision and draw the Future State of the process, participants will be instructed on important keys to developing effective Lean improvement strategies around the VSM. Finally, participants will be shown how Value Stream Mapping can be used for other processes, ranging from small production areas to the global enterprise.

Outline:

  • Lean Thinking overview
  • Getting started with Value Stream Mapping
  • Current State Mapping
  • Envisioning the Lean Future State
  • Future State Mapping and Improvement Planning
  • Mapping processes at other scales
  • Applications and limitations in administrative processes

Target Audience and Outcomes:
No prior exposure to Lean Thinking is necessary, although some prior work with lean is helpful for understanding the context of the course. This workshop is best suited to individuals who will plan and lead improvement events. At the conclusion of this event, participants will be able to map simple manufacturing value streams without support.

Notes:
Participants receive a three-ring binder with all presentation slides and a laminated quick-reference card summarizing key elements of the workshop. Two hands-on exercises are included. To ensure portability, usability, and knowledge-sharing, the workshop strongly reflects the methods taught by the Lean Enterprise Institute. A videotape provides real-world examples of how value stream maps help drive effective lean planning and structure improvement events.
